Calixte Henry (1933–2010) was a Haitian painter born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. He began painting in 1955 at the Centre d’Art, where he studied with American painter Barbara Obris. Over time, Henry developed a distinctive technique, abandoning traditional brushes in favor of razor blades and palette knives, which allowed him to achieve remarkable precision, transparency, and texture in his compositions. Henry’s paintings are known for their refined simplicity and careful balance of tone and color. By eliminating unnecessary detail, he created compositions defined by subtle contrasts and harmonious palettes. Art historians note his preference for monochromatic variations—often exploring rich greens, blues, and soft pastel tones—through which he achieved depth and atmosphere. Today, Calixte Henry is recognized for his distinctive technique and contribution to modern Haitian painting.
