Ronald Mevs, a self-taught master from Haiti, was born in Port-au-Prince in 1945 and passed away on December 9, 2023. He was skilled in various media, including printmaking, acrylic painting on canvas, and sculpture using metal and wood. Mevs maintained a deep connection to the religious and cultural traditions of his homeland, infusing his work with rich graphic symbols. He described the evolution of Haitian culture as “syncretism,” which reflects a blend of European, African, and native Indian influences. Collectors widely appreciate his art, and it has been exhibited internationally. According to Gerald Alexis in "Peintres Haitians," Mevs' travels to the United States in the 1960s may have influenced his preference for lyrical abstraction.
