Haitian artist Jean Pierre Theard was born on May 4, 1949, in Aquin, Haiti. He is the younger brother of the renowned artist Carol Théard. Theard began his studies in architecture from 1967 to 1969, but it was his journey to Mexico in 1969 that had a significant influence on his artistic vision. The striking Mexican architecture and the impactful works of Diego Rivera left a lasting impression on his creative approach. Upon returning to Haiti, Theard connected with influential figures in the art world, including his brother's former mentor, Pétion Savain, as well as Villard Denis, Charles Obas, and Bernard Wah. During this period, a distinctive style emerged that combined Cubist and Surrealist elements. In 1973, he joined a collective of ten artists and drew inspiration from the Greek artist Achille A. Scordillis, which propelled him toward a style that can be described as fantastic realism. You can now browse his art at Myriam Nader Art Gallery in New York!
