Haitian artist Jean Pierre Théard was born on May 4, 1949, in Aquin, Haiti. He is the younger brother of the renowned painter Carol Théard, and like his sibling, he has made a lasting contribution to modern Haitian art. From 1967 to 1969, Théard studied architecture, a discipline that would later influence the structural harmony and composition in his paintings. His journey to Mexico in 1969 marked a turning point in his artistic development. There, he was deeply inspired by the vibrant architecture and the monumental murals of Diego Rivera, which shaped his bold visual language and narrative depth. After returning to Haiti, Théard immersed himself in the country’s dynamic art scene. He connected with several influential artists, including Pétion Savain, Villard Denis (Davertige), Charles Obas, and Bernard Wah. Under their influence, he began to develop a distinct artistic voice that merged Cubist structure, Surrealist imagination, and symbolic Haitian themes. In 1973, Théard joined a collective of ten forward-thinking artists and drew inspiration from the Greek painter Achille A. Scordillis, whose guidance encouraged him to refine a visionary style now described as Fantastic Realism. His paintings are celebrated for their intricate forms, dreamlike atmospheres, and profound exploration of identity and spirit.Today, Jean Pierre Théard’s artworks are admired by collectors and art enthusiasts worldwide. His works continue to reflect Haiti’s creative resilience, blending architectural precision with poetic imagination. You can now explore and acquire original Jean Pierre Théard paintings at Myriam Nader Haitian Art Gallery in New York, a leading destination for authentic Haitian art and masterworks from the Nader family collection.
