James “Jim” Kingwell grew up in Portland, Oregon, and studied ceramics at Willamette University in Salem and Portland State University. Early on, his keen interest in design and silicate chemistry laid the groundwork for a lifetime of creative exploration. In 1971, Jim built his first hot glass studio on the Oregon coast, using recycled glass to experiment with unique color alterations. By 1974, he had begun formulating his own glass from raw materials, sparking a passion that led to the founding of Icefire Glassworks in Cannon Beach, Oregon, where he still works today. What started as a five-year endeavor evolved into a transformative career, earning Jim recognition in shows and galleries across the Pacific Northwest. His dynamic works now grace collections in all 50 states and over 40 countries worldwide, celebrated for their radiant colors and captivating forms.Jim currently uses a virtually colorless glass formula with exceptional clarity—a quality that amplifies every hue and accentuates the inherent spontaneity of molten glass. In his words, “Glass offers all the physical and mental challenges one could hope for in a life of creativity.” The Icefire Glassworks logo, featuring the alchemical symbols for earth, air, fire, and water, reflects Jim’s ongoing commitment to bridging art and science in every piece he creates.
