Pauleus Vital, a significant figure in Haitian art, was born in 1918 in Jacmel and tragically passed away in 1984. He began his career as a cabinetmaker and shipbuilder in Jacmel before making a pivotal decision to join the Centre d'Art in Port-au-Prince in 1958, spurred on by his half-brother, Prefete Duffaut. Vital later returned to Jacmel, where he dedicated himself to painting until his death on June 18, 1984. Recognized as one of the foremost primitive painters in Haiti, his artwork is proudly displayed in the permanent collections of prestigious institutions, including the Milwaukee Museum of Art, the Waterloo Museum of Art in Iowa, and Ramapo College in Mahwah, New Jersey.
