Artist StatementSince September 12, 2005, I have made one small piece of art every day. I collect bits of visual information and experiment with different media and subject matter in these daily sketches. Along the way I have kept a blog of these paintings, now totaling over 5000 works. My larger paintings are natural outgrowths of this obsessive and committed ritual. The subject matter references the natural world and the relationship of the external landscape of northern California to the landscape of internal emotions. My fascination is in the liminal spaces; exploring deeply the edges where physical matter, relationships, and even emotions, collide. Where do air and water and earth meet? And how do you measure and visually describe the space between two people, thoughts, or emotions? Through gestured strokes and expressive color, I seek to capture this mystery and create a somatic and emotional response from the viewer.
