"Channeling the primal urge to create, I have had the innate drive and ability to work creatively with my hands for as long as I can remember. Imagine the “work” expressing a microscopic universe — A place where chaos and energy coalesce to form a recognizable structure — Where the animating energy of creativity interfaces and merges to become physical. This physical shape expresses the energy and decay of life. The source of my inspiration and the basis of my creative journey is imaginitively comprehending this realm in order to depict the transformation of movement towards light." Graduating college in pre-med provided a sound foundation for the physical structures of Allen’s subjects. After graduation, the interest to continue to medical school was overpowered by a realization of creativity and the need to work with one’s hands. This lead to a creative pursuit in ornamental metalwork and blacksmithing. These new skills, and a love of the natural world, resulted in welded animal sculptures. Sculptured metal animals developed, some life-size, some meticulously alive, some commissioned for zoos and public institutions and some sold through galleries. The style was awakening to awards and grants. In 1996, a search for artistic gratification, lead to a move from rural northern Michigan to the D.U.M.B.O. section of Brooklyn, New York City. Surrounded by hundred of artists and influences, in particular a Jungian (Carl G Jung) art group, encouraged exploration of meaning and experimentation of new subject matter and materials. Profoundly influenced by the death of his mother in 2001, Allen’s style changed radically upon his return to Michigan. He began to address the question of death. A series of stark black and white paintings, which explored his experience and feelings, resulted. Returning to a knowledge of sculpture and biological states, his work is imaginative and expresses a world of creativity.
