Artist Statement:Flamboyant, yet self-contained. Ephemeral and delicate, yet formed by fire. Torsos that are refined, forceful, and exuberant like nature herself. An incarnation of gossamery and the impermeable. Like Nature, they come from the earth and emerge from flame. Process:Using the simple “coil building” technique in clay, the torso is shaped to capture a soul. The primitive firing techniques of sawdust and raku create beauty from the intense fire. Each finished torso has a uniqueness all its own. This element of individuality and surprise is a celebration of the human form. The naked form is dressed to represent nature by using feathers, branches, leaves, and gemstones. The symbolic meaning of the semi-precious and rare stones represents the ancient force of nature that created them. Each has a symbolic meaning and the unique beauty of what lies within each sculpture. About: Estella, born and raised in South Africa, studied art in the Netherlands. She now resides in the heartland of the USA. This multicultural background has allowed for a diverse experience which is reflected in the work. A total life experience.
