“Although visually theoretical work has given us new ways to look at the world, my own work can never linger in abstractions and always arrives back around to the human figure and it’s complicated relationships." ABOUTEve Whitaker is a Lansing, Michigan born artist who studied printmaking at Indiana University and received her BFA from Michigan State University. Eve has spent most of her adult life in Texas and now resides in Florida. Eve is one of our original Joyce Petter Gallery artists. When painting Eve agrees with photographer Emmet Gowin, suggesting that the greatest thing an artist can hope for is to remain open, vulnerable, and revealing. Eve once told us “I don’t do cute” but what she does do is thought provoking studies of human interactions, with a twist. For Eve the 3-D aspect of doll making and the act of sawing, pounding and chiseling combined with the noise of power tools, is creativity at its finest. She has made many dolls over the years, mostly constructed of wood with soft textile bodies, sewn and constructed with found applied objects. It is a creative path she can take when paint is not an option.
