Local Saugatuck and Douglas-based artist Kim Zahnow is multi-talented. She splits her time between Lumachrome Face-mounted photography and encaustics. When working with encaustics Kim blends beeswax, resin shellac, and pigments until they come to life under her torch. Unlike other painting methods encaustic is never 'wet' or 'dry', it goes from a solid-state to liquid and back again in seconds allowing additional layers to be added immediately. Kim asks you to consider that it takes 2,000,000 flowers for bees to produce enough wax to complete one of her encaustic pieces. She is inspired by the natural world and has a lifelong fascination with the science, patterns, and organic details found in flora and fauna. She invites you to connect with the abundant beauty that surrounds us and to explore the colors and textures that Mother Earth provides.
