Caroline Reehl Boykin (b. 1987 Mobile, Alabama) has always loved to create. Her childhood on the Alabama coast cultivated her enchantment with art and southern culture. Touches of this admiration of Southern hospitality and grandeur are seen today through her work. A summer of studying figure drawing in Florence, Italy led Caroline to the realization that being an artist was in her bones. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Mississippi in 2005 where her focus was ceramics, but she has a true passion for all mediums in art. Caroline has been creating professionally for over 15 years. She is inspired by her everyday surroundings in Raleigh, NC, and the land she grew up amongst in rural Alabama. Elements of nature, architecture, and life combine in many mediums to create a tension in weight of color and balance the delicacy of subject. Her flowers are in full bloom, focusing on internal strength and external beauty. The intent is not to be precious, but to pull the viewer into a conversation of life and movement, captured by sporadic and impulsive mark-making. Her work is centered around the fragility in a moment. There can be joy and sadness, courage and fear— all within a moment in time and in a breathe of life. Florals and female forms prevail, focusing on internal strength and external beauty. Texture, color, functionality, and line quality are all important aspects of her expressive artwork. In her latest series, Caroline has stripped away all confinements of subject matter. She is giving the viewer an opportunity to decipher meaning through color interactions and her meditative mark making. The squares represent the memories our individual souls create and how we all are connected to each other. The forms and textures interact and contrast, just as our souls do. The viewer feels emotion through the mesmerizing textures made by intuitive small strokes of color. From afar the progression of sizes in squares speak calm and inviting. But as the viewer moves closer, the bodies of color become layered and intricate; even mirrored with the use of gold and silver leaf. Just as one sees the depth and intricacy of a loved one as they become closer and closer to that soul. We find our own unique and unpredictable emotions within the squares, mirroring our human experience and how our souls and memories interact with each other. Caroline's work has been published and featured in major publications including Elle Decor, Southern Living, Flower, Luxe Interiors, along with many others. Today Caroline lives and works in Raleigh, NC with her husband, Will, and two daughters, Alice & Leavie. Her artwork can be found in noteworthy private collections and adorning the walls of thousands of happy homes all over the US.
