“The act of painting, for me, is an internal navigation based on instinct and rooted in nature. My paintings are attempts to transfer sensory memories to a visual reality. I seek rhythm and contradiction in my hues, marks and textures. Each painting is an attempt to tap into the beauty that appears spontaneously at my feet and in my memories – if only I am willing to pay attention.” Joyce HowellJoyce is a spontaneous, intuitive painter who is inspired by the nuance of color relationships. Living and working on the Colorado River provides ample opportunity to observe color changes relating to atmosphere, temperature, wind, time of day and season. Even the most pastoral scene, when observed carefully is riotous in color, texture, pattern and value. Observation of the elements, textures of plant materials and the water as it is affected by depth, wind, light and shadow are played out with paint in the studio.Joyce graduated from the University of Tulsa with a B.S., Business Administration; B.A. from the University of Texas of the Permian Basin, Fine Art; and Texas Tech University with a Master of Fine Art.
