‘I’m always looking for the unexpected, the surprise that makes you wonder’—Dominique SamynBorn in Flanders, Belgium, Dominique studied at the Fine Arts Academy at Tielt, Be.In 1989 she moved to the Washington DC area, where she studied painting at the Corcoran College of Fine Arts. From 1998 to 2001, she lived and worked in Lima, Peru with frequent travels to Ecuador, Cuba and Brazil. During that time she painted her Galapagos Series.From 2002-2005, Dominique worked in Studio 301 at the Torpedo Factory Art Center, Alexandria, VA. In 2005, she moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico where, living on a ranch off the grid and in isolation, it has inspired her new work.Her herd of horses and rescue animals of the region have touched her heart and are the models for her new paintings. Her work is influenced by the Cobra movement in Europe (Karel Appel, Alechinsky and Asger Jorn), known for their uninhibited expressionism. Dominique focuses on three elements: Energy, color and surprise.She has had numerous shows and awards at the East Coast, the Washington DC area, Europe and in South America.
