Kerry Hays is an Atlanta-based abstract painter. Her recent body of works explore the theoretical opposites 'Lightness and Weight' as explored by Czech author Milan Kundera and is prompted by her own personal life shifts. Which is positive and which is negative? Lightness may seem positive but the absence of burden may make us too light, too free. Could this lightness cause a sense of insignificance? The idea of weight conjures heaviness, a burden, it can pin you down to the ground. But does this weight also give your life meaning and truth? Half of this body of work represents Lightness: shimmering color fields that seem as thin as sheets of tissue paper that could fly away at any moment. The other half represents Weight - the work literally weighs more in your hand - it is thick, textural and substantial. The pieces are unified in similar colors and graphic compositions, but in their weightiness, they are opposites
