Caetano de Almeida was born in Campinas, Brazil in 1964. He received a degree in Visual Arts from one of Brazil’s top art schools, Fundação Armando Álvares Penteado, in 1983 and later, an MFA in Visual Poetics from the School of Communication and Arts at University of São Paulo in 2005. As a São Paulo-based artist, de Almeida produces complex acrylic paintings that pay homage to the 1970s Op Art movement, recent developments in hard edge abstraction, and Brazilian textiles. Through the use of thin, colorful lines woven in complicated patterns that are sometimes pushed or pulled across the desired medium, Caetano de Almeida creates bright and unexpected color combinations that move more like thread than paint. His work contains geometric shapes and dense grids that are reminiscent of São Paulo’s twisting roadways and pay tribute to his Brazilian predecessors, Lydia Clark and Hélio Oiticica. de Almeida continues to investigate color, pattern, and rigorous geometry while utilizing emotion to play on Brazil’s current socio-political environment that has been marked by widespread corruption and violence. Caetano de Almeida has shown his work widely in Latin America, Europe, and the U.S. He has had major solo exhibitions at the Museu de Arte Moderna in São Paulo and New York’s 11R gallery (formerly Eleven Rivington) as well as participated in Art Basel Miami and Frieze London.
