William Song’s passion for painting emerges from the unusual arc of his life merging intellectual discipline and intuitive consciousness. A Watson Fellow who graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Law School, Song was nationally recognized in a complex legal specialty. But explorations of meditation processes led to profound expansion experiences that prompted a shift in his life. Extended stays in Italy, Japan, India and New Mexico have also deeply influenced Song’s work. "Light is both consciousness and communication. A painting’s color and light, like musical notes, are energy vibrations that can be attuned to elevate perceptions and feelings. Composing visual hues, tints and tones as emergent possibilities arising in space through inner knowings allows an equilibrium – an open awareness and freedom – to emerge unbounded by the material environment.” Song allows a meditative flow to guide the development of each painting, sometimes over a period of multiple years. He works primarily in oils, sometimes with the addition of cold beeswax medium creating variance in thickness and sheen. Strong, textural palette knife work forms the foundation of most paintings, allowing the artist to build layers of color and form, or scrape away paint, which he compares to a geologic excavation process that allows things to be uncovered, and a sense of hinting at the unseen. Song’s work has been exhibited in galleries and public centers including ArtX Contemporary, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Seattle City Hall, Harborview Medical Center and the permanent collection of Oregon Health and Science University and City of Bellevue.
