Colorado-born artist Jonathan Saiz constructs expansive visual worlds from intimate, jewel-like parts. Moving freely among painting, drawing, sculpture, assemblage, and installation, Saiz resists allegiance to a singular medium or style. His works accumulate like fragments of a larger cosmology, bringing mystical symbolism, social commentary, ecological anxiety, and optimistic irreverence into close contact. Utopian possibility is rarely separated from apocalyptic dread. Instead, beauty, humor, play, and generosity become ways of looking directly at uncertain futures. Saiz’s practice is at once deeply personal and broadly allegorical. Dreams realized and deferred, spiritual searching, climate catastrophe, and the forces shaping contemporary life coexist within glossy, candy-colored narratives that reward both intimate viewing and collective experience. His miniature paintings, often housed within transparent acrylic boxes, function independently while also becoming modular elements in much larger sculptural and architectural compositions. Saiz is best known for #WhatisUtopia, presented in the Denver Art Museum’s Eyes On series in 2019. The monumental installation brought together 10,000 individual miniature drawings, paintings, and sculptural objects around a towering circular structure. Following the exhibition, every component was given away to the public, transforming the project into a meditation on generosity, access, ownership, and the value assigned to art. That same year, his K Contemporary exhibition Colorado Coastal assembled another 1,000 works into an immersive vision of familiar Colorado landmarks overtaken by rising seas. Together, the two exhibitions established the defining tension within Saiz’s practice: utopian hope held against the possibility of ecological and social collapse. His later projects include the 2022 solo exhibition Seed Vault at K Contemporary. Beyond his studio practice, Saiz is the artist and co-creator of the bestselling The Fountain Tarot, for which he produced 79 original oil paintings reimagining the traditional tarot archetypes. The deck has been published in English, Japanese, Russian, and German. He also illustrated Colorfully Courageous Clyfford Still, a children’s book commissioned by the Clyfford Still Museum and released in 2022. In 2026, Saiz continued his relationship with the Denver Art Museum through a Pride collection that translated imagery from his evolving utopian universe into wearable artworks. Saiz studied at Parsons School of Design in New York and Paris and at the Maryland Institute College of Art. He has been an artist-in-residence at RedLine Contemporary Art Center in Denver and a visiting artist at the American School of Paris. His work has appeared in Juxtapoz, Vogue, ELLE DECOR, and Veranda.
