Graciela Sacco (Argentina, 1956-2017) Graciela Sacco was born in 1956 in Rosario, Argentina and died in 2017. She graduated in 1987 in Fine Arts from the National University of Rosario with a thesis about the Argentinian avant garde movement in 1960. Sacco would later return to the University to teach issues in Latin American art of the XX Century. Sacco was part of the generation of artists that was repressed by the government; From 1973-1983 a military dictatorship took control and repressed artists. Due to the repression of the government Sacco has strong ties to social commitment. Sacco has a concern for the relationship between art and everyday life; she wants to intervene in public and private spaces. Sacco’s work focuses on social situations that have yet to be resolved such as famine, hazards, small space for people to live in, migrants, tansits, etc. Due this she has been labeled as a part of the political artists, something she has accepted. Her artwork probes the relationship between photography and memory. Sacco brings attention to the fact that the retrieval of memory is a conflictive and collective task even under democracy. Her artwork appeals to viewers based on her use of beauty and mystery done by questioning and multiplying the In 1992 she started to use the method of heliography, also known as sun writing, as a method to print her images on different surfaces making her one of the first artists to do so. Images she would print were spoons, suitcases, and shoes in the beginning. Sacco refers to the process of imprinting shadows on transparent acrylic sheets as photoserigraphy. Graciel Sacco has represented Argentina in numerous Biennale’s as well as had numerous solo exhibitions both national and international. Exhibitions that her work has been shown at are Soa Pablo 1996, La Habana (1997 and 2000) Mercosur 1997, 1st Biennial of Photography in Vigo 2000, Venice Biennale 2001, Urban Art Festival Toulouse 2002, and the Shanghai Biennial 2004. In the summer 2002 she was a resident at the Delfina Studio London. Sacco was invited to the master artist-in-residence program at the Atlantic Center, in September 2005. She was invited to the Atlantic Center In September of 2005 she was invited to the atlantic center for the arts as a master artist-in-residence program. Sacco has been the recipient of various awards and distinctions, including many international accolades such as Artist of the year, by the Argentinean Association of Art Critics (2001), Konex award (2002 – 2012).
