Patrick O'Brien's striking paintings capture the glory and the grandeur of the age of sail. Patrick was a draftsman in a naval architecture firm before becoming an artist in 1985. He has spent over three decades as a professional illustrator and painter, with clients ranging from National Geographic and The Smithsonian Institution to the U.S. Coast Guard and The Discover Channel. He has also authored and illustrated twelve children books.In 2003 he entered the marine art field, and his first entry to the prestigious Mystic International Marine Art Exhibition won an Award of Excellence. He has won the Museum Purchase Award from The Mystic Seaport Museum, and the National Maritime Historical Society has awarded Patrick with their Outstanding Service Award for his body of artwork. In 2010 the U.S. Naval Academy Museum mounted an exhibition entitled The Maritime Art of Patrick O'Brien, featuring 28 oil paintings by the artist. Deeply dedicated to historical accuracy, Patrick conducts meticulous research for each painting, studying archival materials, maps, ship plans, and firsthand maritime experiences aboard vessels such as the USS Constitution and Pride of Baltimore.Patrick's paintings have been used four times on the cover of Naval History magazine, published by The U.S. Naval Institute, and he was the subject of a four-page cover article in Sea History magazine, published by the National Maritime Historical Society. He is currently the President of the American Society of Marine Artists. As a Signature Member, Patrick's work has appeared on the covers of Naval History and Sea History magazines, and continues to be collected by maritime institutions and private collectors alike. His ongoing series of War of 1812 battle scenes is widely recognized for both its accuracy and artistry, earning him the affectionate title “Mr. 1812” among peers and historians.
