WILLIAM B. MONTGOMERY (b. 1953) William B. Montgomery is a Texas painter and printmaker who lives on a ranch near Elgin, Texas. Born and raised in Tyler, he developed a deep interest in both art and nature at an early age. He studied art at the Kansas City Art Institute and the University of New Mexico. While studying at the Academia de Belle Arti de Perugia in Italy, Montgomery developed an interest in classical European painting which had a major influence on his painting technique as well as his approach to subject matter. A life-long fascination with wildlife, especially reptiles, is a continuing influence and his current work explores animals in their environments, sometimes exploring theirconvergence with civilization. Montgomery is also an accomplished printmaker. His twin interests in natural history and traditional etching techniques contribute to skilled and sometimes humorous prints, mainly of Texas and its residents. His scientifically-precise etchings of snakes have appeared on the covers of a number of important herpetology books. Montgomery collaborated with his wife, author and artist, Margie Crisp, on the award-winning book, The NuecesRiver: Río Escondido (Texas A&M University Press, 2017) for which he created a series of paintings about theNueces River. In 2020 Montgomery completed two paintings which are featured in book, The Art of Texas Parks(published by the Texas A&M University Press in fall of 2022) celebrating the Centennial of the Texas State ParkSystem.
