Since 2002, Will Armstrong has spent twenty weekends per year away from his home - steadily racking up over half a million miles on his vertebrae and on a rotating cast of trusted (though admittedly abused) vehicles.The road holds countless stories and in his work, you will find them.Tales of out of the way honky tonks, movie palaces, cheap motels and barrels of gas paid on questionable credit; stories of both roadside dives or majestic theaters and the musicians that crawl in and out. And most recently, his work reflects his plans to move west from Virginia. He and his new wife, along with his kids, his ex, and his pets have all relocated to the art hub of Santa Fe, New Mexico.Will’s work is the soundtrack to a road trip; songs and artists are embedded on the towns they made famous. Bob Wills, Johnny Cash and Muddy Waters are as much as an influence as Frank Miller and Thomas Nast. The lines of the road have become indistinguishable from the lines of the pen; just as the subject from location. His passion for musicians and their impact of music on our lives extends to his own hobbies; Will is a stand up bass player who played occassional gigs with a band until it wasn't practical and he turned his talents to canvas.Will draws with an oil-based pen on a collage of vintage maps and sheet music. An acrylic wash on top of the drawing gives the work a painterly style.
