Shawn Huckins (American, b. 1984) is a New Hampshire-based painter whose work employs humor and hyperrealism to explore America’s past, present, and future. Recalling familiar visual cues ranging from 18th-century American paintings to vintage portrait photography, Huckins’ near-identical recreations are interrupted by often tongue-in-cheek references to contemporary technology and slang. Through his investigation of past societies’ collapses, Huckins’ work encourages audiences to consider their parallels to the possible hubris of present-day America. Huckins studied at Keene State College in New Hampshire and The University of Wollongong in Australia and received his BA in Studio Arts in 2006. His work has been displayed in private and public collections across the country, including The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, MA, The Tucson Museum of Art, AZ, The TIA Collection, NM, and The Vicki Myhren Gallery at The University of Denver, CO. Huckins has received grants from The Haven Foundation of Maine, The Artists’ Fellowship Inc. of New York City, Colorado Creative Industries, and The Connecticut Commission on Culture and Tourism among others. His work has been featured in notable publications such as Forbes, Juxtapoz, Hi-Fructose Magazine, The Huffington Post, New American Paintings, The Jealous Curator, The Advocate, and 5280 Magazine, who named Huckins as one of five artists to collect in 2015.
