Shawn Huckins (American, b. 1984) is a New Hampshire-based painter whose work employs humor and hyperrealism to explore America’s past, present, and future. Harnessing familiar visual tropes from 18th-century American paintings and vintage portrait photography, Huckins’ work is as much social commentary as it is homage. His near-identical recreations, often interrupted by tongue-in-cheek references to contemporary trends and our social climate, suggest parallels between historic and current-day values and conduct. His work encourages audiences to consider similarities and divergences as we navigate our future. Huckins received his BA in Studio Arts in 2006, studying at Keene State College in New Hampshire and The University of Wollongong in Australia. His work has been displayed in private and public collections across the country, including The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, MA; The Tucson Museum of Art, AZ; The TIA Collection, NM; and The Vicki Myhren Gallery at The University of Denver, CO. Huckins has received grants from The Haven Foundation of Maine, The Artists’ Fellowship Inc. of New York City, Colorado Creative Industries, and The Connecticut Commission on Culture and Tourism among others. His work has been featured in notable publications such as Forbes, Juxtapoz, Hi-Fructose Magazine, The Huffington Post, New American Paintings, The Jealous Curator, The Advocate, and 5280 Magazine, who named Huckins as one of five artists to collect in 2015. Artsy, the online arts sales platform, considers him an artist to watch.
