Paul Tamanian has forged a remarkable visual vocabulary in painted and shaped metal. From great sculptural forms to small, intimate 3-dimensional works, to large, multi-panel wall paintings, the astounding breadth of his work has won Tamanian wide recognition here and abroad. Born in New York, Paul Tamanian has lived in north Florida since receiving a degree in design from Florida State University in Tallahassee. His artistic career began completely by accident: discovered an affinity for clay after reluctantly attending a pottery class at a local community center. Intrigued, moved rapidly from basic skills to technical innovation, and then from clay to aluminum, never looking back and ceaselessly experimenting and innovating. In the decades since, has gone on to exhibit across the United States and has been invited to show his works in the company of some of America's foremost craftsmen and artists, including William Morris, Jun Kaneko, and Richard Jolley, and in a two-man show with legendary painter/printmaker Jim Dine. There are two elements that power Tamanian's work: his relentless experiments with form and his unique and innovative surface treatments. Paul Tamanian is seeking to create a new language of metal and paint. At times he makes aluminum look as delicate and as fragile as glass; at other times his work exudes the roughness of clay or hewn stone. He has recently begun incorporating photographic elements into his process, with remarkable results. Tamanian’s works have been commissioned and acquired by noted celebrities, private collectors, and corporations, ranging from actors such as Halle Berry and Barry Bostwick, playwright Neil Simon, and writer Stephen King, to Delta Airlines and DataMaxx Corporation.
