Robin Denevan begins his paintings with plein air drawings of landscapes, often made on trips to far away places like China or the Amazon. This body of work is a continuation on the theme of deltas, floods, and the world's great rivers that are present within Denevan's earlier pieces, and combine encaustic wax with layers of oil paint. Denevan builds layers upon layers of these materials on the canvas and then removes them with sandpaper and solvents, resulting in a finish that is both richly textured and luminescent. Robin Denevan received his B.F.A. in Painting from the California College of the Arts in Oakland. Denevan currently lives and works in San Francisco, and has exhibited his work throughout California, Chicago, and Cuba, among others.
