Franck Louissaint (1949–2021) was a Haitian painter born in Aquin, Haiti. After completing part of his studies in Port-au-Prince, he began painting independently before joining the Centre d’Art in 1969. There, he developed a distinctive hyper-realist style and later taught painting at the institution. Louissaint is best known for his vivid street scenes and depictions of rural Haitian life, rendered with clarity and careful observation. His work is often described as transitional, moving beyond the traditional naïve style of Haitian painting toward a more modern and simplified realism. Art historian Gérald Alexis noted that Louissaint “broke with the so-called primitive style to achieve an extraordinary degree of realism.” Today, Franck Louissaint’s paintings remain valued by collectors of modern Haitian art.
