Gabe Langholtz (b. 1971) is an American painter living and working in Austin, Texas.Primarily representational yet indebted to American Color Field painting, his work explores color, pattern, form, and line with a heavy emphasis on the two-dimensional surface of the canvas. In the tradition of folk art, Langholtz employs mundane cultural objects and activities to establish contemporary narratives, often using humor, parody, and pastiche as tools for social commentary. His work has been featured in New American Paintings and Create! Magazine, and exhibited nationally at Hashimoto Contemporary (Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York), BravinLee Programs (New York), Bowery Gallery (New York), The Painting Center (New York), and Conduit Gallery (Dallas). Influences include Mary Fedden, Philip Guston, Agnes Martin, and Gary Bunt, with folk art and collage central to his distinctive style.
