Born and raised in Japan, Akiko (Shomura Swaren) creates ceramics and jewelry inspired by nature’s beauty and subtle transformations. Her abstract ceramic works invite personal interpretation—some see flowers, others the ocean, snow, or dancing figures—and she delights in hearing what each viewer perceives. Most of her glazes are original formulations using materials gathered from her own surroundings. In her jewelry, she often employs the ancient Korean gilding technique Kum-boo, fusing 24-carat gold onto silver to create luminous, enduring designs that reflect both precision and artistry.
