Internationally renowned artist Albert Paley is among the most accomplished sculptors working today. Beginning in 1974 with his groundbreaking Portal Gates for the Smithsonian’s Renwick Gallery, to his monumental installation of thirteen sculptures along Park Avenue in Manhattan in 2013, Albert Paley has pioneered the evolution of metalwork from craft to fine art. The Carmel Art Association was proud to celebrate him with an “Honorary Artist Member” in 2014. Over the past fifty years, Paley has created more than 90 public installations. He has been the subject of eight major monographs and a documentary film, featured in more than 300 solo and invitational exhibitions around the globe, and collected by fifty prominent museums including New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art and London’s Victoria and Albert Museum. Paley is the first and only metalsmith to be awarded the American Institute of Architect’s coveted “Institute Honor.” Through the decades Albert has expressed his vision on an ever-larger scale as he continues to push the boundaries of what is believed possible with iron and steel. Today Paley Studios realize everything from small-scale furnishings to heroic, 100 feet high sculptures—all achieving “a harmonic merging of Art Nouveau’s decorative richness, Abstract Expressionism’s energy, and an organic integration of lushness and musculature, lightness and heft.”
