Alejandro Cartagena is a Dominican photographer who lives and works in Monterrey, Mexico. He is primarily known for the Carpoolers series where he photographed construction workers and tradesmen commuting to work. He captured these images overhead from a pedestrian bridge looking down at a freeway during their early morning commute. This series touches on the movement of labor, inequality, suburbanization, and sprawl. These workers have to commute in the back of a pickup truck because they cannot afford to own their own vehicle. Forced to endure long commutes during early morning hours that construction work demands, these workers are unwittingly part of the process of unfettered urban sprawl.
