Aleksei Petrovich Tkachev was born in Chugunovka, Bryansk region, on September 11, 1925. He studied at the Moscow International Art School from 1939 to 1945 under G. Riazhsky and at the Moscow Art Institute/Surikov Institute from 1945 to 1951 under S. Gerasimov and F. Modorov. He began exhibiting his works in 1948. Important shows include: ‘All-Union Art Exhibition’, Moscow: 1950, 1951, 1952, 1955.‘Soviet Russia’, Moscow: 1960.He taught in the creative studios of the USSR Academy of Arts in Moscow from 1976 to the 1980s. Aleksei Tkachev became a member of the Russian Academy of Arts in 1978. This gave him the title of “academician” - one of the highest honors and most prestigious titles a Russian artist can receive. He is considered a leading realist painter of the 1950s and 1960s. He was awarded the USSR State Prize in 1978. Other titles and awards include: 1963: Honored Artist of the RSFSR (Russian Soviet Federal Socialist Republic)1974: People’s Artist of the RSFSR1978: People’s Artist of the USSRHe has additionally been awarded four orders and many medals. He has created major works with his brother, artist Sergei Tkachev. Their works hang in numerous museums, including the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg, and have been exhibited at the Smithsonian International Gallery in Washington, D.C. They both live and work in Moscow.
