Alex Katz was born July 24, 1927 to a Jewish family in Brooklyn, New York. In 1928 the family moved to St. Albans, Queens, where Katz grew up. Katz began exhibiting his work in 1954, and since that time he has produced a celebrated body of work that includes paintings, drawings, scultpures, and prints. Alex Katz's work has been the subject of more than 200 solo exhibitions and nearly 500 group exhibitions around teh world. His work can be found in nearly 100 public collections worldwide, including the Art Institute of Chicgao; the Hishorn Museum and Sculpture Garden at the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madird; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC; the Philadelphia Museum of Art; The Tate Gallery, London; and the Whiteny Museum of American Art, New Yorkm among many of others.
