Alicia Armstrong's passion for making art began in childhood while taking music and art classes, learning printmaking, collage, ink drawing, pastel, and painting. She graduated from the University of North Carolina Asheville in 2000 with a BFA in painting. Alicia luminous Color Field paintings are meditations on the natural world, abstractions with radiant color, texture, light and atmosphere. In all of her work surfaces are alive, and color shimmers across the canvas. Through a creative manipulation of materials and a rare sensitivity to color and tone, she makes paintings that are simultaneously abstract yet boldly representational. Suggestive of local and distant landscapes, fields of flowers, or even the expanse of the sea, her paintings evoke emotions of serenity and expansiveness. “I want my paintings to be seen as if you’re squinting your eyes, taking in the expanse, not the details.
