Alyse Rosner (b. 1968, United States) is a painter whose large-scale abstract works investigate the contradictions within the natural and synthetic world, exploring themes of loss, regeneration, and environmental transformation. Working primarily with graphite frottage, acrylic, and gestural mark-making on raw canvas, wood panel, and yupo, Rosner builds richly layered surfaces that merge the tactile with the atmospheric, the obsessive with the expressive. Rosner's practice is rooted in process and accumulation. She begins with graphite rubbings sourced from her immediate surroundings—textures pulled from trees, gates, sidewalks, and architectural surfaces—which she then layers with transparent washes of color and gestural brushwork. The resulting compositions oscillate between drawing and painting, creating fields of obsessive marks that reveal themselves slowly, rewarding sustained observation. Her work holds a draughtsman's sensibility, building form through line and hatching, often creating raised or textured surfaces that carry both visual and physical presence. Each of Rosner's series is informed by personal and collective experience, reflecting the cascading environmental and health crises shaping contemporary life. Her recent work maintains a deep connection to nature, acknowledging the fragility and resilience of ecosystems in flux. Through deliberate layering and erasure, she transforms humble materials into evocative meditations on memory, time, and the persistence of change. Rosner has presented solo exhibitions at Rick Wester Fine Art, New York (seven solo shows since 2012), ARC Fine Art, Mark W. Potter Gallery, Artspace, The Gallery at Three Rivers, Westport Arts Center, and Washington Art Association. Her work has been included in group exhibitions at the Newcomb Art Museum of Tulane University, The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, BravinLee Programs, Odetta Gallery, Kathryn Markel Fine Art, Real Art Ways, and Westbeth Gallery, among others. In 2024, her work was featured in an Art in Embassies exhibition at the United States Embassy in Geneva, Switzerland. Her work has been reviewed in The New York Times, Hyperallergic, Art New England, Harper's Magazine, The Hartford Courant, and Vasari21, and featured on PBS's All Things Connecticut. She has received grants from the Connecticut Office of the Arts and The Sustainable Arts Foundation. Rosner's work is held in the collections of Google Ventures, Morgan Stanley, Credit Suisse, Eastern Connecticut State University, NYU Langone Health, The Fine Art Collection at Montefiore Einstein, The Kirkpatrick Bank Collection, Aramco Americas, and The Connecticut Artist Collection, as well as private collections in the United States, Europe, and the Middle East. She holds a BFA from the University of Michigan and an MFA from The American University. Rosner lives and works in Connecticut.
