Amber Blazina is a contemporary Western oil painter known for her bold, expressive wildlife portraits and emotionally charged approach to paint. Working primarily in an alla prima method (completing a piece while the paint is still wet) she brings immediacy, instinct, and momentum to every canvas. Her brushwork is confident and physical, her color choices fearless, and her compositions alive with movement. The result is work that feels less observed and more felt; intimate encounters rendered in oil. Raised on a wheat farm in rural Eastern Montana, Amber’s connection to animals and open land runs deep. Her subjects, bison, horses, and wildlife emerge through sweeping strokes of saturated pigment, their forms defined by both energy and anatomy. Blazina worked as a freelance designer for over a decade before transitioning to painting full time in 2017. That experience continues to shape her sophisticated sense of composition, and she approaches negative space, movement, and visual balance with an intuitive understanding honed through years in the field. Yet where design demands precision, painting offers her freedom. Influenced by Impressionism and Abstract Expressionism, Amber’s work occupies a space between representation and raw emotion. Her brush flies from palette to linen with a sense of urgency; the act of painting is physical, even cathartic. The finished portraits carry a powerfully feminine presence, strong yet vulnerable, grounded yet spiritual. Animals meet the viewer’s gaze not as trophies or icons, but as sentient beings with weight and spirit. An Associate Member of the Oil Painters of America and the Society of Animal Artists, Amber has been recognized in numerous regional and national exhibitions and was featured as Artist of the West in Big Sky Journal. She has been juried into prestigious shows including the Charles M. Russell Museum’s First Strike Auction — a meaningful milestone for the native Montanan who grew up learning about Charles Russell and the legacy of Western art. Now painting in the Rocky Mountains of her beloved home state, Amber Blazina continues to chart her own course within contemporary Western art.
