American artist Amy Hutcheson’s works are a response to daily life. Each composition explores relationships between space, line, color, and form. Each canvas begins with a series of gestural drawings influenced by music, that is then translated into a series of abstract shapes. Forms intersect and overlap to create a strong figure-ground relationship. Surfaces are layered on top of each other and then erased and manipulated. As a result, each image unfurls then curls up within itself, folding and unfolding at the same time. Each painting explores what is intimate, what is on display, what is cherished, and what is abandoned. Many of her pieces reveal pencil marks that showcase the artist's hand, inviting the viewer to extend their gaze along the picture plane. ARTIST STATEMENT "My responsibility as an artist lies in creating a space—both for myself and the viewer—to experience and reflect on the tension and fluidity of opposing forces in everyday life. The contrast between biomorphic and geometric forms, and the balance of weight within non-objective contours are the tools I use to examine the necessity of these opposing elements. Through biomorphic and geometric visual language, I dismantle and reconstruct the world around me, forging dynamic relationships between color and form. This process is fueled by a deep-seated need to explore beauty through opposition, is not about simplification. Rather, it’s about crafting new complexities that invite viewers to engage with each piece.My palettes are informed by moments in daily life—the shifting hues of autumn leaves against the sky, the works of other artists or even the colors that sounds create in my mind, all become sources of influence. For me, the pencil mark is the most intimate part of this process: the first whisper of possibility as a piece begins and the final act of connection as a painting nearcompletion. These marks remain, inviting viewers to uncover and interpret.My work is deeply tied to the duality of life and the tension that beauty often requires. The language of color and mark-making I use reflects this duality, weaving compositions that alternate between rest and movement, peace and tension. Each element relies on its opposite to exist fully, creating an experience that invites the viewer to pause, reflect, and continue onward."
