André Pierre (1914–2005) was a Haitian painter renowned as the pre-eminent artist of Haitian Vodou spirits, or loas, and regarded as Hector Hyppolite's worthy successor. Self-taught, Pierre is considered one of Haiti's greatest artists, celebrated for the rhythmic interplay of line and color that animates his depictions of the loas. His paintings have been widely reproduced in publications on naive and religious art, including Edwidge Danticat and Jonathan Demme's Island on Fire (Kaliko Press, 1995). Pierre's work is in the permanent collections of the Milwaukee Art Museum, the Figge Art Museum in Iowa, the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, Connecticut, and Ramapo College in Mahwah, New Jersey. His paintings remain among the most significant visual records of Haitian Vodou tradition, bridging religious practice and fine art.
