Born in 1977 near Detroit, Michigan, Andrew Madvin grew up curious and, with the freedom to explore the outdoors, he quickly became interested in the natural world around him. This “eye” and familiarity with nature would influence his work later. Early in his youth he displayed a passion for creativity with a clear talent to make things. Andrew’s innate skills blossomed in his high-school metals and jewelry classes; they eventually earned him work at a custom jeweler’s. He went on to achieve gold and silver scholastic awards on a national level for his jewelry art designs. Natural energy combined with a scholarship to propel Andrew to Detroit’s College for Creative Studies. There, Andrew abandoned the delicate format of jewelry and embraced the more robust study of sculpture. Exposed in the process to the alluring medium of glass, there was no doubt it was the beginning of a life-long relationship. Andrew was seduced at once by the fire-in-the-soul of hot glass. “The material holds a palpable excitement that I can feel. I see endless possibilities in form and technique just waiting to be discovered – it’s definitely a physical attraction,” he says. Andrew went on to continue his studies at California College of Art in Oakland/San Francisco and Pilchuck Glass School, Seattle on full scholarships. His profound glass experiences led him to open the Axiom Glass Studio in Detroit, Michigan in 2000. That 10,000 square-foot, state-of-the art facility gives him a vast arena for his boundless personal creativity. Andrew produces his original glass works to the highest quality, craftsmanship and creativity. His limited edition fine craft and fine art sculptures continue to evolve as his techniques flourish and his ideas expand. Andrew Madvin’s installation and custom commission works are collected nationally and internationally, and they’re available through The Marshall Gallery.
