Angela Johal is a California-based painter whose geometric, hard-edge works engage color, perception, and optical rhythm. Growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area during the 1960s and 1970s, Johal was shaped by the visual language of that era—psychedelic color, precision, and clarity—an influence that continues to inform her practice today. She received her BFA in painting from San José State University in 1985 and currently works full time from her Bay Area studio.Johal’s paintings are defined by smooth surfaces, exacting geometry, and carefully calibrated color relationships. While the compositions appear direct and immediately legible, they reveal layers of complexity through optical effects, transparency, and spatial illusion. She is drawn to geometric forms for their universality—shapes and patterns that transcend culture, age, and language.Her process begins with a carefully constructed composition, drafted by hand using pencil, straight-edge, and compass. Color decisions are made intuitively, often while listening to music, creating a synesthetic relationship between sound and hue. This approach is central to her ongoing Variations on a Theme series, which borrows its structure from music: a single compositional “theme” is reinterpreted through successive shifts in color and arrangement. Each painting becomes a distinct iteration, building quietly upon the last. Johal’s Rhythm & Colour series further explores perception through intersecting dot systems and chromatic interaction. Subtle changes in alignment and overlap produce illusions of transparency, movement, and depth. Dots appear to float, shift, or pulse across the surface, creating a visual rhythm that unfolds as the viewer engages with the work.
