Anne Blankson-Hemans is a Ghanaian British painter whose work occupies a compelling space between narrative figuration and expressive plein air landscape. Colour is central to her practice; she approaches each palette as a field of possibilities, utilizing tone, temperature, and gesture to build atmosphere and meaning. Her studio serves as a space of ongoing exploration where ordinary objects—such as the familiar tubes of paint in her selected work A Lot Of Potential—become symbols of curiosity, discipline, and the latent potential these materials represent. Anne’s figurative work focuses on scenes of everyday life, placing Black presence at the centre of narratives rarely shown in traditional European art. In contrast, her landscapes, painted directly outdoors across Cumbria and the Lake District, reflect her instinctive and immediate response to light and place. Current Projects & Professional Standing She is currently developing Fragments of Belonging, a multidisciplinary project bringing together painting, poetry, and film to explore memory, identity, and the emotional histories held within the harbour towns of Whitehaven, Cumbria, and Cape Coast, Ghana. Based in West Cumbria, Anne serves as Vice President of the Society of Women Artists and is the artist in residence at Rosehill Theatre in Whitehaven. Her work has been exhibited across the UK and is held in private collections in Britain and abroad.
