Anne Harney is a Boston-based painter who earned her BFA Honors in Painting from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design in 2011. Her work, while representational, combines observation and interpretation. As she states, “I prefer to begin my work from life. My landscape paintings usually follow me into the studio the following day to capture the light and color on a more abstract, larger painting.” Her subjects are not always immediately connected, but the still lifes and landscapes all hold something personal. Objects such as her grandmother’s iron, plaster models, dolls, fabric, mirrors, and soda crates from a cousin’s barn, all make for an interesting story.Anne’s landscapes of New England include Martha’s Vineyard and the urban scenes of Boston, where she continually finds inspiration in the local color. More recent bodies of work incorporate different perspectives while reminding her that it’s just a shape and color. Trying hard to eliminate the non-essentials in her work, she hopes to create a bold and decisive statement. Anne’s work has been recognized with numerous honors, including the George Nick Award, the Marcia Lloyd Award, the Book Award, along with VSC Artist Grants in 2016 and 2019, and the Vermont Studio Center Residency in 2016 and 2019; she is also a member of the National Association of Women Artists, the SOWA Artist Guild, the United South End Artists, and has received official Boston Artist Certification. She is represented by galleries across the United States, from Atlanta, GA, to Edgartown, MA; Charlotte, CA; and Kansas City, MI.
