ARTIST STATEMENT "Narrative and ritual are essential pillars in connecting the past with present and future. With an intentional link to history, my practice utilizes an Afro-surrealist vocabulary as an offset of Afro-futurism while symbolically exploring the echoes of our perceived reality as it relates to conditions of growth through hardship. Through creating reimagined artifacts and mixed-media drawings that feature figures posing as “conductors” or time travelers, I’m fabricating an extended story that transcends time and cosmic location. At the core of this exercise, is a foundation of my personal curiosity and experience of the tension that exists between loss, joy, elation, mysticism and expression. Ultimately, I am looking to discover whether the collective voice of our ancestors mirrors our own."
