(1940 - ) Arthur Turner was born in Houston, Texas in 1940. He received a Master of Fine Arts degree from Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan in 1966 and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of North Texas, Denton in 1962. A watercolor painter working in abstraction and representation, while on a visit to Austria, Arthur Turner was inspired to paint focusing on the smallest things in nature, elaborating on their mysteries such as the exact red hue of a dragonfly. “Watercolor is not very forgiving,” Turner says. “ If you try to cover up your mistakes, it looks like it. But it also offers the most beautiful luminosity, because you are also using the white of the paper as part of the color. It’s similar to the quality you get with stained glass.” Turner is inspired by the palette of Paul Gaugin, saying that Gaugin would paint with an under layer of chrome yellow and build a color on top of that. Arthur Turner’s work has been shown in numerous exhibitions both nationally and internationally. His work is also part of the permanent collections of The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Museum of Southeast Texas, Beaumont, the McNay Art Museum, San Antonio, as well as private and corporate collections. In 2020 Turner had a solo exhibition at The Glassell School of Art, The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, where he taught watercolor painting for fifty years.
