Barbara Marder is a Boston-based contemporary enamel artist and painter who uses vitreous glass enamel as a fine art painting medium. While enameling is often associated with jewelry or small decorative objects, Barbara transforms copper, steel, and fine silver into luminous “canvases,” building richly layered compositions through successive kiln firings. Her original enamel artwork is created using transparent color overlays on opaque grounds, resulting in depth, texture, and radiant surface effects that appeal to collectors seeking distinctive mixed-media and glass-based fine art. Barbara maintains her enameling studio at Artisans Asylum, where access to shared fabrication tools complements her dedicated enameling workspace. Inspired by both visited and imagined landscapes, she works intuitively, focusing on organic forms, expressive color relationships, and tactile surfaces. The result is contemporary enamel art that blends painterly freedom with technical precision. Formally trained as a painter, Barbara also maintains a spacious watercolor studio in her home, where she creates traditional watercolor paintings exhibited in regional venues. Her expressive style carries across mediums—from enamel to watercolor to jewelry design—each requiring mastery of different processes while retaining her signature focus on color, movement, and atmosphere. A longtime public school visual arts educator, Barbara credits her years in the classroom with nurturing her creative spontaneity and openness to experimentation. She is a member of the international Enamelist Society and holds an MFA with a dual concentration in painting and art education from Boston University College of Fine Arts, as well as a BA in Fine Arts with a painting concentration from Skidmore College. Through ongoing workshops with masters of enameling, metalsmithing, and painting, she continues to expand the possibilities of contemporary enamel and fine art practice.
