Benjamin Klein (b. Chicago) is a Brooklyn-based painter whose surreal, atmospheric landscapes construct worlds of quiet mystery and emotional resonance. Populated by enigmatic, animal-like figures, his richly layered compositions merge dreamlike color with restrained theatricality, exploring the threshold between the visible and the imagined. Klein's practice is rooted in the language of transformation. His paintings depict ambiguous narratives suspended in twilight states—scenes that feel simultaneously timeless and fleeting, familiar and strange. Through meticulous layering and attention to light, he builds surfaces that shift between transparency and opacity, inviting prolonged observation. The figures that inhabit his canvases—part creature, part symbol—function as conduits for memory, desire, and the unseen forces that shape experience.Working with a refined palette and deliberate compositional structure, Klein balances formal rigor with psychological intensity. His landscapes are not depictions of place but constructions of feeling—spaces where the logic of dreams collides with the precision of observation. Each painting operates as a self-contained world, rewarding sustained engagement with subtle shifts in tone, gesture, and atmosphere. Klein holds a BFA from Concordia University, Montreal, and an MFA from the University of Guelph. Originally from Chicago and raised in Montreal, he now lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
