Bill Reid is a forecaster, storm-chaser, videographer, and photographer from the San Fernando Valley. He holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s in climatology from California State University, Northridge. These early academic pursuits steered him toward his future career path. In his photography, Reid documents a variety of tornado forms, some that are thin like a thread hovering over the land while others are girthy and speak to their potential for destructive behavior. Reid’s images disrupt the generic twister form we expect and speak to the specificity of the conditions responsible for their occurrence. Similarly, Reid’s work depicts a subject most of us would shelter from but his images do not replicate the demolition we anticipate, instead, he represents them the way they are observed, at a distance, as a force that isn’t inherently malicious, and with respect for what is beyond our control. Bill Reid has been the primary tour director for Tempest Tours since 2001 and spends part of the year in The Plains leading tour groups and photographing severe weather conditions. In 2007 he launched his online archive, Stormbruiser, to serve as an accessible database to share his weather reporting, tour information, and portfolio.
