Brently Condon is a Bismarck based artist. Originally from South Dakota, he grew up in the Standing Rock and Fort Yates areas, raised with a deep appreciation of his Lakota culture. He began drawing as a young kid, tracing pictures until he could do them on his own. He attended the Art Institutes International in Minnesota, where he studied visual effects and motion graphics. It was during this time that he fostered his love of horror and sci-fi with his creativity, and developed a fondness for artists like Francisco Goya and HR Giger. "I've always been interested in the macabre side of things. Everyone has a dark and a light side. I've always been interested in that." As romanticized as native culture can be, Brently knows the often harsh reality of it. Death, addiction, and violence have been apart of his life as long as art has been. "It wasn't uncommon to go to school and someone didn't show up. Things were so dark back then that you didn't wonder if they were sick, you had a feeling, and sure enough it was usually a disappearance or suicide." These themes are deeply explored in his works, guided by his personal connection with Lakota spirituality and lived experiences. Today, Brently resides in Bismarck, and is looking forward to creating more. His darker works took some time to create, and he now is interested in exploring more peaceful themes to reflect where his life is at today. "I hope my paintings make people feel something. Whether they're scared or intrigued, all art is different and makes us feel something."
