Biography: Born and raised in New England, Brian Emerson has always had a desire to explore, sketch, and paint the world around him. In the mid-1990’s, he moved to Maine where he met and married his wife, Colleen Barter, daughter of Maine artist Philip Barter. Working alongside his father-in-law on large installation projects and observing him in the studio helped the young artist develop in style and hone his technique. Emerson’s goal in life and in his art is to truly see, explore and appreciate his surroundings be at the rocky Downeast coast, flowers casually assembled in a vase, or the red brick buildings of Portland. His paintings incorporate bold lines, strong color, and exaggerated perspectives, which invite the viewer to interpret and complete the spaces both within and outside the work. Brian Emerson lives in southern Maine with his wife, and daughter, Honey. Artist Statement: Living in a coastal town in New England, inspiration is abundant! Working from nature, adding or simplifying to achieve a certain composition and feeling is my goal. I opt for bold lines, form, and colors; exaggerating often to evoke emotion. I hope observers recognize scenes, shapes, and objects in the paintings but leave room for their own interpretation and enjoyment.lines, form and colors; exaggerating often to evoke emotion.I hope observers recognize scenes, shapes and objects in the paintings but leave room for their own interpretation and enjoyment.
