My objective when painting is to capture the spirit of Northern Ontario in her many different moods, expressing the emotions I experience when immersed in the landscape. I am drawn to the moody tension that builds during seasonal transitions — as when summer gives way to fall — or the drama of an approaching storm and the profound silence that follows once the weather has passed. I favour sunrise and sunset over midday light, and I am continually inspired by trees and rock that have been shaped, torn, and weathered through years of wind and water. Working predominantly in oil, I have developed a distinct visual language that anchors each painting. Expansive, semi-impressionistic skies are paired with stylized interpretations of rock, roots, crevices, and mosses that form the forest floor of our rugged wilderness. Recurring elements — Pines, aging Hemlocks, and my signature Birch along the lake’s edge — are placed with intention, guiding the viewer instinctively toward what is most essential within the painting.
