Artist BioCheryl was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, to a large extended family. She received herBachelor of Science in Industrial Design from the University of Bridgeport where she wasfortunate to meet her life partner. Having lived 16 years in Savannah, Georgia, and 14 years inthe mountains of Western North Carolina, she has lived her adult life in the South. Cheryl’scircuitous journey to professional artist has included an interesting array of jobs, includingSenior Package Designer, Promotions and PR manager for an amusement park, to teachingassistant at a Montessori school. Her studio is a 35 foot transit bus on 22 acres bordering theNorth Toe River in Mitchell County North Carolina. Cheryl needs nature and space. Themountains of North Carolina will forever be her home.Artist StatementAddicted to color and pattern, drawn to irreverence and visual dissonance, Cheryl paints andshapes wood elements, creating abstract low relief assemblages. The result is an expressive, painterly approach characterized by qualities of color and texture. Her work, while abstract, isfilled with visual reference and meaning. It is often subtly subversive. Cheryl’s assemblageshave societal and political context cloaked in visual abstraction. She states “That obfuscationreflects society’s convenient acquiescence to injustices and crises in plain sight”. She refers to her work as a modern typography, a visual dialogue. In utilizing found objects and salvaged materials Cheryl’s practice is informed both creatively and philosophically. Creatively the use of salvaged materials encourages improvisation and demands an immediacy; inspiration in the unexpected. Philosophically, in our throw away society, Cheryl views building items of artistry and permanence from discarded materials as an act of resistance.
