Christine Watson’s paintings, pastels, and prints are a rigorous, unsentimental exploration of the essential qualities of the island towns of the Mediterranean, with a current focus on Greece. She reveals the richness of spaces and surfaces—including steps, stairways, walls, and alleyways—the very fabric of habitation, aged by wear and weather. Her work moves beyond the picturesque to rigorously explore the abstract qualities of these built spaces. The artist focuses on the dialectic of light and shade, texture and colour, setting vibrant hues against crumbling surfaces to create sophisticated, formally rich compositions. Born in Southsea, Hants, Watson received her foundational training at Winchester School of Art and the Slade School of Fine Art. This classical academic training was further refined following her 1993 receipt of the prestigious EA Abbey Award in Painting, which included a defining residency at the British School at Rome. Her technical expertise, particularly in pastels, has garnered significant peer recognition. She is a two-time winner of the coveted Schmincke Prize (2015 and 2021) at the Pastel Society Annual Exhibition, leading to her election as a full member of the Pastel Society (PS) in 2022. She is also a member of the Printmakers Council and was elected an Associate Member of the Society of Graphic Fine Art (SGFA) in 2024 and a full Member of the Society of Women Artists (SWA) in 2025. Her work is held in major public collections, including the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) in London.
